John William Waterhouse (April 6, 1849-February 10, 1917) is an English painter.
In 1849, John William Waterhouse was born in Rome, but both parents were British painters.
He spent his childhood in Italy, and when he was five, his family returned to London, but soon after that his mother died.
Young John William Waterhouse began studying painting while helping his father's atelier.
In 1871 he entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts.
John William Waterhouse's early work was influenced by Lawrence Alma-Tadema and Frederick Leighton and was primarily a classic theme.
Most of the paintings are about women who have appeared in myths and literary works since the 1880s. Many of them inherit the norms of pre-Raphael images.
From 1888, his masterpieces were born one after another, such as “The Girl of Charlotte”, “Hyras and the Nymphs”, and “Ophelia”.
He taught at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in his later years and became a full member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in 1895.
February 10, 1917 John William Waterhouse died of cancer.
